I’m a life-long learner.

And, I’ve got a lot to still learn…

One of the things I learned over the past few years is what earns you a spot at the table…

Sometimes, in some worlds, not too far from the phone you’re reading this on…

There’s these suits in suites. Ah yes, the suite suits…

Despite my hunger and ability to make shit happen… #Execute #Communicate #Negotiate

Some suits are bias. They’re judgmental. And there’s only a couple ways to earn a spot at the table…

  1. A piece of paper that says Bachelor, Master or Doctoral
  2. You’re already wearing one of those suits and have your own suite
  3. You’re Zucks, Bezos,, or fill in another tech tycoon here…

I hope things will change in the future for any degreeless powerhouses…

In fact, they already are…

Google, Earnst & Young, and Costco are some of the big players not wearing said suits in said suites any more…

These forward-thinking organizations are assessing talent based on skills and assets individuals actually bring to the table…

Not just a sheet of paper that says so.

Oh yeah… And here’s an article on Glassdoor featuring 15 companies doing this exact human capital scavenger hunt…

And why they’re doing it…

Thanks Amy Elisa Jackson for publishing the article 🙂

Then, there’s another school of thought…

How the Master’s Degree Became the New Bachelor’s Degree

This is an article published by Lydia Dishman on Fast Company

She cites Career Builder’s study that finds two things worth mentioning here…

  • 27% of employers are recruiting Master’s graduates for jobs that used to only require Bachelor’s degrees

And…

  • 37% of employers are looking for 4-year college grads to fill jobs previously requiring a high school diploma.

Yikes!

Don’t go and fill out your FASFA application just yet…

I think that’s a tweetable…

How players make decisions in my space…

One of the things I learned is about players making decisions in my space…

This includes customers browsing your wears and decision-makers sitting at the table.

People buy based on letters following your name

Not every time… But fancy letters after your name…

Like MA, MS, MBA, MD, and PhD can seal the deal…

As a college dropout…

This blows.

As a college dropout who’s also:

  • Became a professional athlete and US Paralympian
  • National Champion in 3 different sports
  • Published multiple books
  • Started multiple businesses… And failed along the way
  • Spoken at corporations and for Ivy league universities
  • Coaches individuals, leaders, and entrepreneurs to maximize their impact, passion, and life…

This blows.

I’ve literally been told by event organizers in the wake of major speaking events where I wasn’t the keynote…

Damn. You should have been the keynote. We’re sorry…

We picked the other guy as the keynote… Wel… because of his degrees.

Again… This blows.

No one cares what happened to you…

They only care what you’re doing about it.

So, I’m doing something about it.

Actually, this is a lesson I’m passing down to you…

It’s wisdom I wish I would have taken seriously when I was younger…

You don’t need a college education to become successful.

You don’t need a college education to be fulfilled.

You don’t need a shit ton of student loan debt.

You don’t need a piece of paper to qualify, quantify, and verify you’re worth…

You don’t…

It’s just a piece of paper…

But in some situations… Some circumstances…

Having a Master’s or Doctoral college degree will get you in the door.

I didn’t say Bachelor’s because of what Lydia published and I cited earlier…

But having this piece of paper will significantly help you get a seat at the table.

And having this piece of paper only opens doors… It never closes them.

You may learn absolutely 0 applicable knowledge for your career from the years spent submitting assignments, writing papers, and presenting group projects…

I’m not arguing you will…

But you may also get a seat at the table…

And when you do get a seat at the table…

It’ll be up to you to execute.

This is why I’m a life-long learner…

This is why I’ve continued my higher education despite previously dropping out

This is why I encourage you to continue reading and reading, applying and applying…

Nothing beats experience…

But nothing hurts worse than learning someone’s piece of paper was the reason they got a seat and you didn’t…

Especially when the gifts, power, and value you deliver… Is so much better.

If you’re not meant for school… I understand. I wasn’t either.

But you better be getting so good…

The suits in suites can’t ignore you.
