Quick and Dirty Crushing Today Tip #1

Break It Down!!!!

Remember Forrest Gump?

You never know what you’re gonna get…

But life ain’t always a box of chocolates…

It’s often brown with a crisp, distinct odor…

But that shit ain’t chocolate…

I know it’s fiction… But it’s also so true…

When we think about how many chocolates we’ve got to eat…

Bad example…

When we think about all the things on our list…

Or about how many steps one goal, one priority, one success is going to take…

We end up not doing anything… Putting everything to the side…

And likely end up eating the whole box of chocolates.

Because someone had to do it.

And now you’ve got to do quadruple duty in the gym for the next 2.5 weeks…

Let’s start by breaking it down into much more manageable chunks.

If you’re going to write a book…

You don’t just sit down and write it… And bang that thing out in a weekend.

For example, I just got done reading Steven King’s IT… On Audible.

Take a look… 44 hours. And not the regular 44 hours either.

The reader speaks fast enough that you can’t speed it up too much… Because you can’t understand what’s going on…

And there’s only 24 hours in a day… So… … …

… … … That’s a long time.

But it was worth it. The story was amazing. The reader was absolutely genius with the performance…

But you know what else…

At the end of the book, King notes when he started writing the book and when he finished.

It took him over 50 months to write IT!

Over 4 years! And he’s no slouch when it comes to cranking out books either.

But, he writes his books just like everyone else does.

One page at a time.

And when you average out the number of days it took him to write IT, you realize he averaged less than 1 page per day.

#LongHaul

But that’s what’s possible when you break stuff down… One word… One page… At a time.

Which brings me back to Gump and…

Quick and Dirty Crushing Today Tip #2

Forrest just did it.

And what is he most known for doing?

Ruuunniiiing.

That’s how you type out Forrest saying running.

Side Note:

I returned kickoffs in high school…

And I always laugh a little harder than everyone else when Forrest burns through the end zone and levels that tuba player!

End Side Note.

Whether you’re burning through the end zone and into the tunnel…

Or going cross country 26.2 times…

Like Forrest, you shouldn’t get caught up in wondering how far you’re going to run.

You just do that shit.

One step at a time. And the first step is the most important one…

If you’re a procrastinator… Keep reading because I’ve got more helpful tips later down the page…

Because I’m procrastinating on writing them right now…

What happens when you break your writer’s block and you start writing?

It’s easier to keep going.

What happens when you start the workout?

It’s easier to finish… And way easier to get at least 70% of the reps in…

What happens when you start cooking?

You don’t stop cooking and order Domino’s…

You finish cooking!

And that’s why it’s so important to just get started.

Because it’s so much easier to finish once you’ve already started.

So, like this post…

I had to get started with 1 Quick and Dirty Tip…

Which brings me to…

Quick and Dirty Crushing Today Tip #3

Set yourself up for easy wins and crushing success

Let’s say you got your list…

Some people say to put the most important things at the top and do nothing else until you finish those things…

That works for machines… But I get hungry.

That works for robots… But I got to go #1 and #2

That works for Spok… But I got like 82 emails I gotta handle right now.

That works if you’re on kidney dialysis… But I’m just hung over.

I’m with ya…

First step… Stop drinking on school nights…

Second step…

Put 2 things that aren’t time dependent at the top of your list…

Like picking up Little Tim and Tara from school at 3:30PM.

Put two easy, low ass hanging accomplishment fruits at the top of your list…

Like making your bed…

Working out…

Call your parents…

Read 1 chapter of that time management book…

Ok… I can hear the crickets from here…

But when you put 2 easily accomplished things at the top of your list…

Before you know it… You’re on a roll!

In fact, 2 down is nearly a streak!

These victories, regardless of how small they seem…

And regardless of how long it’s been since you called mom…

Are huge.

So like Forrest just kept running… Let’s hit

Quick and Dirty Crushing Today Tip #4

Squirrel!

Listen…

I’m like super freaking ADD.

I’ve already been distracted by multiple things since I started writing this…

Text messages… My dog putting her ball in my lap… Some other electronic ding noise.

Outlook reminding me I’m supposed to do something… Somewhere… With someone.

Damn…

So, things add up as the day goes along.

I got it. I’m with you. Like right now, literally with you.

It’s time to start focusing your attention.

Multi-tasking is super sexy.

Who wouldn’t like to think that they can do 8 things all at the same time.

And ladies…

My hat goes off to you putting on mascara, holding your coffee, with your friend on speaker, eating your yogurt, and driving down the street.

Your attention doesn’t need to be 100% on putting spoon to mouth…

Or swallowing and talking at the same time…

Or putting a brush millimeters from your eyeball in a moving vehicle that you’re operating…

I get it… Despite how tough it is to swallow and talk simultaneously…

And how much I’m protective of my eyes…

Story for another day…

But, do you think you’re as great of a driver while all that’s going on?

Nope. You’re not even a good driver.

At best, you’d be moderately unsafe. Moderately…

Buckle up kids.

When you’re focused 100% on the priority you’re doing right now…

Whether that’s an assignment at work.

Helping your kids with their homework.

Driving…

Crushing your to-do list…

Or even better… Crushing your short-term and long-term goals…

You are just better when you’re 100% focused.

So how do you do that?

Stop looking at the fucking to-do list!

Stop trying to do everything at once!

You’ve already written the list.

You’ve already looked at your calendar.

You know consciously or unconsciously what’s there…

You created it…

So stop reviewing and reviewing and reviewing and reviewing it.

Hunker down on to-do #3 (since you just crushed the easy #1 and #2)

Kick ass, and take some names!

Turn the phone to mute. Close Outlook or Gmail. Close the door.

Minimize or eliminate the things bargaining, buying, and pulling for your attention…

Because you’re a bad ass… And you’re even more bad ass when you’re 100% focused.

For now, let’s focus on…

Quick and Dirty Crushing Today Tip #5

You only procrastinate doing the things you don’t like doing.

I said I was a procrastinator.

I am…

Here’s one of the big, big things I learned about procrastination.

If you’re procrastinating… You don’t really love what you do.

Seriously… You flat out don’t.

When I was working my ass off… 7 days a week…

For the dream, the hope, the goal of my becoming a US Paralympian…

It was every moment, of every hour, of every day, of every week.

My wife and I joke about it today.

Literally nothing else mattered. Nothing.

More importantly than that, when it comes to getting things done…

I was excited to do them.

I jumped up to do them.

I was there early and I stayed late…

I came prepared. I had extras just in case. And I was more than willing to do what it takes.

I was eager. I was on point to the Nth degree.

So, that’s Quick and Dirty Crushing Today Tip #5A:

You only procrastinate doing the things you don’t like doing.

If you don’t love what you do… Then you better find something about it, or something else you do love.

Because Sunday through Thursday, when you’re crawling into bed…

You’re going to hate what’s coming.

You’re going to wake up and not want to do anything…

And you’re going to drag ass…

Not so much because you’re tired, but because you just hate what you’re doing with your life.

That’s procrastination in a nutshell.

The change from point Procrastination to point Crushing doesn’t happen overnight…

But if you hate what you do… Figure out how you can spend more time doing what you love…

So you can begin procrastinating only on the things you hate.

And maybe that’s just it.

Quick and Dirty Crushing Today Tip #5B

The thing you think you want… You don’t really want.

If you were so excited, so driven, so ready to do something…

Why are you procrastinating doing it?

Sounds like a personal problem to me.

Here’s one of my personal problems…

I love speaking from the stage!

I absolutely love doing that work and answering Q&A afterwards…

I love traveling… I love getting people excited. I love standing ovations.

I love connecting with new people. I love helping people begin to believe in themselves.

I love everything about that part of speaking…

What I don’t love is everything that has to happen before I step on stage.

But, that has to happen. It has to happen if I’m going to be successful in this business.

What do you need to do to be successful in doing what you love?

I’m willing to put in that work… I don’t love it… But I’m willing.

And for me, it’s much easier to not procrastinate on that aspect of this business if I’m going in knowing why I’m doing it.

If I go in with the mindset, this effort, this work, this action will be what helps me to get on stage…

To talk in front of more people…

To change more lives…

To become one of the best motivational speakers in the industry…

To become one of the most sought-after keynote speakers in the game…

Then I’m willing to do it… And I get more excited about crushing it!

How about you? I’d love to learn from you…

What tips have been helpful for you in crushing today? Beating overwhelm?

Another productivity hack that’s helped you achieve your goals? Make today your bitch?

I want to know… So don’t procrastinate and tell me right now in the comments J
